Mikel, a Naval Academy graduate, has a warfare designation of Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) Officer, and has over 3 years of international experience including deployments to Afghanistan. On Friday, December 12th, several MSFS students visited DC-based startup incubator 1776. Founded through a generous grant from the DC government under then mayor Vincent Gray, 1776 provides working space, mentorship, and funding opportunities for innovators focusing on leveraging entrepreneurship to address policy gaps in education, smart cities, health, transportation, energy, fintech, and cybersecurity. Mr. Carpenter serves as Senior Principal, Global Practice Leader at Development Alternatives, Inc. (DAI). As an international development practitioner, he works with government officials and local consultants in developing countries to improve the quality of services government provides to citizens, especially in the field of public financial management and accountability. “I am most proud of the tangible impact I have had over the years working on various projects: streamlining processes for businesses and citizens, combating corruption, and addressing citizen needs,” he said. Ms. Fike currently manages the China portfolio at the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) which focuses on connecting U.S. companies to infrastructure development opportunities in emerging markets. She says that it is incredibly rewarding to work on “win-win” activities such as helping to create jobs for U.S. firms while also helping China develop clean energy and advanced transportation solutions.
