Shelby Jo Huey
Jo Huey is an accomplished professional with regional expertise in the Middle East, North Africa, and Southeast Asia, with a special affinity for nonprofit and development work both domestically and abroad.
Recently serving as the Sexual Assault Prevention Coordinator at The Refuge Utah, Jo Huey led prevention education classes across central Utah to decrease risk factors and increase protective factors against sexual and interpersonal violence. She represented the organization publicly, acting as the main liaison with local organizations to support prevention projects. Through her efforts, the nonprofit’s prevention program nearly tripled in nine months, with dozens of educators regularly requesting the organization’s visiting presenters.
In the academic sphere, Jo was heavily involved as a Research Assistant and Teaching Assistant in the Political Science Department at Brigham Young University. She enjoyed assisting in courses such as Global Inequality, National Security Affairs, and International Relations of the Middle East. Last year, she joined a team conducting field research in Malaysia, where she led data collection on the interplay of ethnoreligious identities and Malaysian political parties.
Jo has also been a dedicated educator, teaching beginner to advanced Malay and Indonesian courses and developing curricula for various language programs. She has put these skills to use during several of her other international experiences, including working in a refugee camp in Greece, leading volunteer programs in Malaysia, and studying Arabic intensively in Morocco.
Jo’s comprehensive skill set and diverse experiences make her a valuable asset in both academic and community-focused roles.
