The Hinrich Foundation Global Trade Leader Scholarship is a scholarship established through the generous contribution of the Hinrich Foundation. Its mission is to advance mutually beneficial and sustainable global trade through research and educational programs. The Scholarship will provide one student admitted into the MSFS program with a $15,000 scholarship per year, for a total of $30,000 as well as mentorship. How did you find out about this scholarship opportunity? How was the selection process?
I first found out about the Hinrich Foundation Global Trade Leader Scholarship through the MSFS financial aid and admissions sites. I also attended a virtual webinar that the admissions teams hosted, where I had the opportunity to hear more about the scholarship from both the Hinrich Foundation directly and from a previous scholarship recipient. The selection process took place alongside the general application process. To apply, I submitted a separate scholarship application, which included an essay detailing my interest in sustainable global trade. I then participated in a panel interview with several senior stakeholders at the Hinrich Foundation, before being selected as the scholarship recipient.
How do you think your previous work experience prepared you for this scholarship?
Prior to MSFS, I worked in wealth management, where I developed new investment products for clients based on constantly changing global market conditions. Through my career, I became very familiar with international trade and finance. I knew that I wanted to continue to expand this knowledge at MSFS though, to further understand the role of sustainable trade in international development.
Why is understanding sustainable global trade important and what motivated you to apply for this scholarship?
I believe that sustainable global trade is critical for meeting sustainable economic growth goals, specifically in developing countries. Effective trade policy can help countries allocate resources more efficiently, raise living standards, and even decrease inequality. I applied for this scholarship to continue learning more about sustainable trade and to engage in challenging discussions with trade practitioners on these topics. Transitioning from a career in finance to one in international development, I also hoped to gain a broader understanding of the impacts of past and current trade policy and diplomacy efforts in the development space.
What do you intend to concentrate on while at MSFS? What are your interests in your studies?
At MSFS, I am concentrating in International Development, focusing on economic growth and trade policy in Asia. I am particularly interested in studying the interrelation between culture, policy, and development.
In what way do you think being a Hinrich Global Trade Leader Scholar will help you in your professional career after MSFS?
The Hinrich Foundation maintains a strong, global community of trade practitioners and policymakers and builds a tight-knit alumni network. The Foundation is always available to discuss both my academic and career interests and continues to connect me to others with similar interests. Since being selected for the scholarship, I have had the opportunity to join incredible events, including webinars, trainings, and networking events that have already had a significant impact on my studies and will help further my career. I look forward to becoming more involved with the Foundation this semester as a Hinrich Trade Leader Ambassador and am happy to discuss the Foundation’s work with anyone who is interested!
