Karen Mae Salvaggio
Mae is a native of Maryland, but her time living and working in foreign countries molded her passion for international relations. Her early career experience as an Air Force Officer instilled a curiosity for the intersection between Diplomacy, Security, and Crisis Management. She is pursuing a Master of Science in Foreign Service with a concentration in International Development. She hopes to work in conflict areas as a force for stabilization and development.
After graduating from Clemson University with a bachelors in Political Science and a minor in Psychology, Mae began her career as an Airfield Operations Officer in the U.S. Air Force. During her time in the Air Force, she gained skills in professional communication, team collaboration, project and personnel management, and emergency response skills. She has also completed internships in the U.S. House of Representatives, County Government, and Refugee Resettlement where she has grown in her research and policy advocacy abilities. As a current graduate student at Georgetown's School of Foreign Service, Mae is focusing in classes on conflict management, post-conflict development, and humanitarian affairs. She is also proficient in Spanish Language. She hopes to initially work in crisis response elements of NGOs or International Organizations before eventually pursing a long term career in the US Department of State.
"Mae chose MSFS in order to gain the quantitative, analytical, and communications skills necessary for her desired field of work. Additionally, MSFS allowed access to learn from the best minds in diplomacy and development."
