Amitabha Mukherjee’s work at The World Bank has focused on providing practical advice and support to governments to improve public service delivery, including modernizing judicial and legal systems, public administration, public financial management, revenue administration (tax and customs), and treasury management. In addition to policy dialog, analytic reports, and technical assistance, Mukherjee has led or contributed to more than US$6 billion of World Bank-financed operations across high-, middle-, and low-income countries, many in collaboration with the United Nations, the European Union, the Asian Development Bank, the New Development Bank, and other multilateral and bilateral partners.

Mukherjee’s responsibilities have covered Africa, Europe and Central Asia (ECA), East Asia and Pacific (EAP), and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Regions of the World Bank. His country experience includes (but is not limited to) Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, China, Cote d’Ivoire, Croatia, Georgia, Ghana, Indonesia, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Liberia, Moldova, Mongolia, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Poland, Romania, Russia, Senegal, Serbia, Tajikistan, Turkey, Ukraine, and Zimbabwe. He was recognized by the World Bank Group as Mentor of the Year in 2016.

Mukherjee served in the Indian Administrative Service from 1983 before joining the World Bank in 1996, gaining hands-on experience in core government functions across various tiers of government (public order, administration of justice, city management, public expenditure management, revenue mobilization, land management, urban and rural development, conduct of elections, and disaster management). He has served as District Magistrate, as Municipal Administrator, and infield and secretariat positions including in Planning and Urban Development Departments and delivery agencies (e.g. Chairman, Kolkata Improvement Trust, and the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority).

Amit served as an Adjunct Professor at the Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University from 2015 to 2016.
