Student Activities

The MSFS Program encourages students to participate in various activities that broaden their experience and develop their leadership skills. Some of these activities have included:

  • Student Representatives -- Student representatives are elected each year by the MSFS Student's Association (to which all MSFS and joint-degree students belong) and the Graduate Student Organization. These student representatives work with the MSFS Director and Associate Director to address student needs.

  • The Women in Foreign Service Program -- This group is dedicated to increasing awareness of the role of women in the workforce. By creating collegiality among the SFS women, developing career networks, presenting guest lectures and special events, and assisting in establishing role models for women both on and off campus, the Women in Foreign Service Program strives to make a difference for women.

  • Women in International Security -- Women in International Security (WIIS) is an international, nonpartisan educational organization dedicated to enhancing the role of women in foreign and defense affairs.  WIIS offers a comprehensive program designed to educate and promote women in careers related to international security. WIIS is a part of the Center for Peace and Security Studies and is open to all interested graduate students.

  • The Georgetown Journal of International Affairs -- The Georgetown Journal of International Affairs is a quarterly publication featuring articles, commentary and reviews by prominent figures in the field of international affairs. The Journal is staffed by graduate and undergraduate students. Many MSFS students occupy senior editorial and business positions.

  • The Georgetown European Foreign Service Association -- The Georgetown European Foreign Service Association (GEFSA) aims to enhance US-European ties and understanding among students in the School of Foreign Service.

  • Mortara Center Illuminati Dinners - The purpose of this series is to provide graduate students with the opportunity to have an informal dinner conversation with distinguished Georgetown practitioners.

  • MSFS Latin America Forum -- a web-based conversation forum designed to generate discussion on various topics involving Latin America.

  • MSFS Middle East and North Africa Forum -- MENA organizes special lectures, panels, and other events related to topics involving the Middle East and North Africa.

  • Professionals in Russian, Eurasian and Eastern European Affairs -- PREEA is a graduate student organization that serves as a platform for students from all Georgetown schools to explore their interests in Eastern European and Eurasian affairs.

  • Net Impact -- formerly Students for Responsible Business - is a network of emerging business leaders committed to using the power of business to create a better world.

  • Big Buddies Program -- MSFS students meet on Saturdays with kids from the Marie Reed Elementary School.  Past events have include taking our little buddies to the Christmas Card Workshop at the National Postal Museum and a trip to the ice-skating rink at the Sculpture Garden on the National Mall.

  • Charity Drives and Community Service -- Each year, MSFS students organize charity events, such as clothing drives for local charity organizations, and participate in local community service programs, including feeding the homeless at Loaves & Fishes (a soup kitchen) and working with the elderly at Sarah's Circle (a Senior Services program).
