Basic information about the Juris Doctor/Master of Science in Foreign Service joint degree:

  • 4 years full-time study
  • 113 total credit hours; 74 hours of Law Center courses and 39 hours of MSFS work
  • Degree candidates must satisfactorily pass the MSFS language proficiency examination.
  • Degree candidates must pass a one-hour oral examination

First Year
15 hours of MSFS required curriculum courses + 9 hours of MSFS electives/concentration gateway courses

Second Year
29 hours of Law Center required courses

Third/Fourth Year
3 hours of the MSFS Workshop, 12 hours of MSFS electives, and remaining Law Center required courses and electives

Hours breakdown
15 hours of MSFS required curriculum in the first year. 29hours of the traditional first-year domestic law courses. 3 hours in the MSFS workshop (years 3 and 4). 29 hours in further domestic law courses including Professional Responsibility(years 3 and 4). 16 hours in international law courses including: 3 hours in International Law I: Intro to International Law;4 hours in further international law courses; and 9 hours in international law related courses which complement the MSFS concentration (years 3 and 4). 21 hours of MSFS electives within the area of concentration (years 2, 3, and 4).

Careers with a JD/MSFS degree span across the private, public, and non-profit sectors.

Admissions processes and decisions for the MSFS and the Law Center are made independent of one another. Applicants to the JD/MSFS joint degree program must submit separate applications and fees to the appropriate schools. Please indicate on all admissions forms that you are applying to the joint degree program.
