International Negotiation Simulation Hosted by the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy

ISD, in conjunction with the U.S. Army War College, offered an International Negotiation Simulation focused on a future crisis in the southern Caucasus.

This was a terrific opportunity to practice international negotiating skills.  Each country team received a detailed negotiating position and conducted intensive face-to-face meetings with the other country teams over the course of the simulation.  The teams decided which member would play the role of Foreign Minister or Defense Minister in the various meetings.   ISD Associates from the State Department, Pentagon, CIA, and the Foreign Ministries of other governments, as well as representatives from the Army War College, were assigned to each team as mentor/advisors.  The exercise culminated with a ministerial-level meeting including a (simulated) UN Special Representative, who provided feedback to the respective negotiating teams.

The Game:  It is the year 2018 and armed conflict is reigniting between and over Nagorno-Karabakh.  Selected graduate students were divided into seven negotiating teams -- representing , , Nagorno-Karabakh, , , , and the – to engage in a series of complex bilateral negotiations to resolve the conflict.

The simulation took place on Friday November 16 (4:30pm-9:30 pm) and Saturday November 17 (8:00am-2 pm) at the ICC Executive Conference Room (7th Floor) and ICC classrooms.
